InsideOut vol. II : Double up

InsideOut vol. II had its double up at two separate exhibitions at the art and technology project house Platform4.

In the end of August it was participating in the Platform4 In a Box exhibitions (see article) and then it was also displayed at the Platform4 Award Exhibition (read more) during the last weekend of October. Both events were a nice experience and the fact that people today are not that afraid of getting involved, letting a work invade and that most of the visitors are willing to participate in a work, which even demands direct contact with one’s skin, is simply just satisfaction. The general positive feedback is the top of the cherry pie.

One other detail about exhibiting at the Platform4 Awards is that the real-time biofeedback piece won the Jury’s Prize.

the sweet and the sour go together… as after a happy smiling night i found my equipment messed up and a computer stolen the day after. so no display on the second day of the exhibition – the work is actually stolen as it was awarded (only other versions backed up). everybody can get an idea about how depressing that is. as i am quite sure that those dirty bustards stealing the computer have not even a tiny idea about how important stuff there is lying around on that machine….

Arduino – Processing workshop w. Stefanie Wuschitz

In the end of June i have been attending the 3 days workshop with Stefanie Wuschitz (from Ms Baltazar’s Laboratory) and enjoyed the days of Arduino and a little bit of Processing. It was very much about the basic understanding of the two softwares and its potentials, but beside it i managed to make some small sensors of conductive fabric and some graphite on wood/paper.

Forest – as part of MediArt exhibitions

Back to the forest. After a little break in Oslo i am back to prepare an installation for the opening of a collaborative exhibition – between the frames of Art and Technology Semester display.

Documentation of the large-scale prototype and work process

As a part of MediArt Exhibition(s) i am presenting a work together with Sandro Masai. The piece Forest is a result of some months’ work and fits the semester theme Arts in Health.

The exhibition will take place in one of the hospitals of Aalborg and will be displayed for 3 weeks in June 2011.

We are very excited about it – looking forward to present something that is made for a public space – and not for a typical exhibition hall. It makes it all incredibly exciting and also challenging. I am sure that we will have some interesting observations and notifications during the weeks of the display.

The piece Forest is a large sense-universe where humans are engaged in a specific way: they are exposed to an environment that is highly sensitive to its users, and its responsiveness is changing over the time the user uses for participation. Though the users/interactors are also influenced by the emotional transformation that the forest produces.

Oslo – Part II

Oslo is left behind.

The twelve days in Oslo are now history. The NIME2011 Conference was a nice experience – some very intense days with a great amount of information and experience.

Started out with the one-day tutorial – by Sarah and Lara Grant from NYC. They together introduced us participants to felted signal processing. So we did a little bit of sort circuitry and myself i ended up with this little thing:

The sound of it imitates the good oldschool racer car video game sounds. Quite impressive if you put the video on and play the felt.

I believe that i will continue felting in the future – and make myself even more aquatinted with the variety of conductive materials. It is really great fun!

One of the paper talks had been based on Adrian Freed‘s work around smart materials. This one also has been inspiring, though it is a little bit of a shame that there had not been any demo sessions on his work(s).

All in all the conference had been an explosion of information, discussions, exchanging and a really big set of evening concerts.

Adventures of Oslo – Part I

So this how I suddenly find myself in a hacker festival.

As a part of my study trip to Oslo I have been workshopping for a couple of days now. The main idea of the workshop – led by Lars Graugaard and Dan Overholt – was to find ways to apply the Kinect in a certain artistc mini project, to explore its potentials of any type of artistic application.

This is kind of the method where you are given a certain technology and you try to shape an idea so that it fits together with the technology. This part i have had some difficulties with, so i ended up with a little project that makes great advantage of the Kinect, though it does not exploit its benefits to a high level. As i keep realizing that i am still the good old crafter, i am not interested in technology as a goal in itself. That had been my main approach so far, and i only see meaning in continuing my work in that way.

On the other hand i can also sometimes get totally amazed by some hardcore hacking and digital programming where the technology is stretched to its limits, without having much artistic/aesthetic meaning.

So the result of my participation in the workshop is a wider understanding of a certain technology, some Max MSP programming and a Twitter site run by a Kinect itself.

The main approach here is playfulness and a sort of narrative. The camera detects some objects (jit.blobs) and by measuring the sizes of these, it takes the size of a person and sees the difference between the person being alone or close to someone. By these simple changes certain organized sentences are triggered and being readable on the Kinect’s twitter site as single tweets. Creating a narrative by random and unintended behavior in a certain space. Surveillance questions appear… I see several potentials in the project demo, and probably one day i will get back to it and work further.

Now it has to be presented on sunday on the Arts.On.Wires festival – together with some other projects that have been developed during the week, having quite different approaches.

What i am incredibly excited about – and have been for a while now – is the soft circuit workshop, which i am attending tomorrow at the Pre-NIME Conference. After algorithmic thinking i really have a strong need of working with my hands – working dirty and making loud noise. As it will be the theme of the one day workshop.

My adventure in Oslo continues for a little while. Hopefully with more and colorful experiences.

Pretty Smart Textiles

Just got back from the Pretty Smart Textiles exhibition and workshop at TEKO, Herning.

Filled with even more ambitions and totally inspired. A nice day with textile gadgets, wire-embroidery and a little bit of workshopping. This last part could have been lasted longer, but the experience is nice anyways.

Here is a (very) quick mock-up for a design concept, made with felting and el wire:

The workshop was facilitated by two kind artists/designers from Holland, Melissa Coleman and Dorith Sjardijn.

Some pieces of the exhibition could not leave me without huge fascination. So here comes a tiny list of favorites:

So hard not to mention almost all the pieces – they all have a nice feature and they are very different in character. Which is, i think, what makes it so interesting within this field: there are amazingly endless possibilities – and it talks to all the senses. And on a very exciting level.

Final event of iABC

Dear Everyone and All iABC friends

The people behind the little association It’s a Boring Century are going to take the break that gives them time to unfold in other projects and makes them inspired to give you more of iABC in the future…. sometime.

So now we are saying goodbye and thank you with a little special final event where we are performing ourselves together with some nice friends. The location is also unordinary – the small and cosy Galleri Niemi where everybody always gets surprised by this or that.

And if we do – let us do it with manner… Afterparty in Café Nordkraft where we also hope to see a lot of good people jumping around the tables and filling out the little café.

Some weeks ago I was invited to join in a performance with Enikö Buday (dance), Zsolt Sörés and Christian Skjødt (sounds).

This is how it happened that I made some visuals for them in Roham Bár, which I enjoyed incredibly much – hope that we can repeat it sometime in the future.
